About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Harlem at 2084 Frederick Douglass Blvd, Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant delivers an exceptional culinary journey into the rich world of Ethiopian cuisine. Whether you are new to this flavorful tradition or a seasoned enthusiast, Lalibela invites you to savor soulful, authentic dishes crafted with care and vibrant spices.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Lalibela Sampler, a generous platter uniting tender tibs wott, flavorful yebeg alicha, and hearty doro wot, complemented by fresh cabbage, kik alicha, and gomen greens. Priced at just $25, this dish exemplifies the generous portion sizes and incredible value that customers rave about. Fans of seafood will appreciate the Lali Assa Tilapia, a whole tilapia expertly seasoned with traditional Ethiopian herbs and spices, delivering a tantalizing balance of earthy and zesty notes.

For those craving meat, the restaurant’s chicken and lamb specialties shine with depth and complexity. The Doro Wot is a standout—a slow-cooked, richly spiced stew with tender range chicken legs and perfectly simmered boiled eggs bathed in a fragrant blend of berbere and kibe. Lamb lovers will find delight in the Awaze Tibs, where succulent strips of marinated leg lamb dance on the palate with hints of jalapeño heat and aromatic awaze sauce, or the Lalibela Special Tibs, seasoned to perfection and roasted with rosemary and garlic.

The menu also hosts a diverse array of vegetarian options, such as the Vegetable Combo which features an inspired mix of gomen, kik alicha, mesir wot, atakilt, and shiro—each bite bursting with traditional Ethiopian spices that are bright yet comforting. Appetizers like the crispy Veggie Sambusa and the refreshingly tangy Avocado & Tomato Salad provide a perfect introduction to the meal, offering light layers of texture and flavor before the main courses arrive.

Beyond the vibrant flavors, Lalibela’s atmosphere complements the dining experience beautifully. The clean and minimal decor creates a welcoming space that feels authentic without distractions. Reviewers consistently note the warm, genuine hospitality from staff who are knowledgeable and eager to guide diners through the menu, enhancing the overall sense of comfort and connection. The dining area and washrooms maintain a high standard of cleanliness, underscoring the professionalism that runs through this beloved establishment.

Customer praises reflect more than just satisfaction with food; they express a deep affection for Lalibela as a community hub. One guest described it as feeling “like home” and remarked on the restaurant’s resilience and thriving spirit even through challenging times. Several have highlighted the outstanding gluten-free experience, the generous portions that exceed expectations, and the unbeatable value where quality consistently surpasses price.

Whether you’re eager to immerse yourself in the warm, spice-infused flavors of the Afriсan highlands or looking for a laid-back spot to enjoy generous plates and great wines, Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant stands out as a true Harlem gem. It’s a place where each dish is an invitation to explore tradition, every bite bursts with vibrant layers of flavor, and the welcoming atmosphere makes each visit unforgettable.

The absolute best gluten free restaurant experience I have had in New York until this day! And I cost me only $24. It is absurdly cheap. I will be tipping extra just because the food should be priced higher for such amazing quality!!! HOW am I discovering Ethiopian food like this is naturally gluten free. Huge portions! The picture doesn’t show how much food you truly get! I am moving away from this neighborhood next week, but I just found this place

Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant deserves its flowers. Five years strong — that’s something worth celebrating, especially for a spot that made it through the pandemic and came out thriving. Every time I’ve passed by or stepped in, it’s full of life — never empty, always welcoming, always consistent. The service is warm, the energy is good, and you can tell people come here because it feels like home. The chef recommends the Lamb Awaze Tibs, and while I haven’t tried it myself (Uber driver pick-up life), I’ve seen enough satisfied faces to know it’s the real deal. Shout-out to the whole Lalibela team for five solid years of culture, community, and flavor holding down Harlem. Keep shining — y’all built something special. Flavors that last. Community that matters.

Nice Ethiopian. My first time having this cuisine in NYC! The decor is clean and minimal, but it works. This evening their was only one lady in the front managing all the tables. Being a Monday night not very busy. She was friendly and helpful explaining the menu and making recommendations. We ordered 2 appetisers and 3 mains between three of us. The portions are quite big and we landed up eating a lot as the food was delicious!! Would highly recommend this place… and will surely plan to visit again!

What a fantastic Ethiopian meal! The vegan sampler for 1 had much variety and came with plenty of injera. I love Kitfo (raw), and this portion was pretty large, so flavorful, even spicy! The waitress was attentive and so friendly as well.

Absolutely delicious and reasonably priced food. Every time I went most of the other patrons were Ethiopian - this is always a good sign for authenticity.
